Lancashire UNISON does not provide basic information about computers, networks and the internet. However, if you are new to this subject a good place to start is the BBC WebWise site. For advice on how to use the internet visit your local library or a UKonline centre. These have been set up to help everyone in the UK who wants to learn how to access to the internet.
Many websites use cookies to "remember" information about you. A cookie is a program sent by the server to your computer. It makes it more convenient for you by allowing you to visit pages within a site without having to reintroduce yourself with each mouse click. If you are concerned about your privacy while visiting this site read our site terms
As you move the mouse around the cursor (an arrow) will also move around the page. When it rests on text that links to more information it will turn into a pointing hand. When it does you can left click on the mouse and the link will open.
If you have difficulty with, or prefer not to use, the mouse,or are using a laptop, you can move around the site with the enter and tab keys. The tab key will take you to each link on the page in turn starting from the top left to the bottom right. When you reach the link you want to open press enter. If you get to the last one and want to start again keep pressing tab. If you want to go back press shift and tab.
You can print pages without the top or side banners by clicking on the Printer friendly page at the bottom of any page. This will open a new browser window on your computer. You can then send the page to your printer using the print option in your browser.
Controlling text and colours in your web browser You can specify the font sizes, styles and colors, and foreground and background colors of Web pages displayed on your computer screen, even if the author of the Web page has already specified these. You can also specify the color used to indicate links in Web pages, or a special color for links that is used only when the mouse passes over the link.
This is useful if you have low vision, need larger fonts, or need high-contrast colors. You can set Internet Explorer to use the colors and fonts you specify, your default Windows colors and fonts, or the settings you specify in your own style sheet.
