1. Choose a Course from the list below.
2. Fill in the Application Form and get it approved by your Branch or Full-time Official.
3. Arrange paid release from your employer to attend the course.
4. Return your application form to:

Applications for training/seminars/conferences MUST be sent to the Branch - not directly to the provider - for verification by the Branch Education Co-ordinator or Assistant Education Co-ordinator; expenses will NOT be paid for attendance on courses which have not been approved by the Branch. Training courses should be selected closest geographically to a steward's workplace or home.
Union Reps Stage 1 – essential 10-week foundation course for all union workplace representatives. After a short break, reps then move onto the 2nd part of the course – Union Rep Stage 2. For experienced reps, there is the 10 day Employment Law course.
Health and Safety Stage 1- is for health and safety reps. After a break, they move onto the 2nd part of the course H & S Stage 2. For more experienced/senior reps, there is the 10 day update course.
Learning Reps Courses - These 5-Day courses gives reps the skills they need to advise members and negotiate over learning opportunities. Usually followed by 3-day IAG or Essential Skills courses.
These are more challenging, year-long courses for union and H&S representatives and branch officers:
Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
can lead to 16 NOCN credits and IOSH Safety Practitioner Award. This
course is run on a Day-Release basis only.
Dpiloma in Employment Law
This course is run on a Day-Release basis only.
Diploma - Contemporary Trade Unionism
Covering the development of Trade Unison, current issues facing us and the
future perspectives. Evening/days.

Our courses are held at Blackburn College's TU/H&S Education Centre, 15b Preston New Road situated close to Blackburn Town Centre, at the junction of Preston New Road and Barbara Castle Way (Free) Street Parking available – East Park Road (by Corporation Park) and Shear Brow (off BCW).
Trade Union Reps have a legal right to time off with pay at full average earnings in order to attend TUC courses. This right is contained in the Employment Protection (Cons) Act (1978) and ACAS Code of Practice Time Off for Trade Union duties and activities.
Safety Representatives have a legal right to paid time-off for training under the 1977 Safety Reps and Safety Committees Regs. (Code of Practice on Time off for the Training of Safety Representatives).
