UNISON - the public service union www.unison.org.uk
Promoting members' views and UNISON policies UNISON members have a very direct way of getting their message across to politicians - through political lobbying. When you join UNISON you are given the opportunity to opt in to what we call the UNISON Labour Link (formerly known as the Affiliated Political Fund or APF). Your contributions to this fund help to facilitate our lobbying within the Labour Party. Meanwhile our General Political Fund supports local and national campaigns and is not affiliated to any political party.
This enables us to promote members' views and argue for UNISON policies, which will improve working terms and conditions, help protect public services and create a better society. It's the opposite of a blank cheque for Labour. We keep up the pressure and use our valuable links to get UNISON's agenda heard.
It's vital to strengthen connections between your local Labour party and your UNISON branch. UNISON Labour Link members in the branch can affiliate to the local Labour party and send representatives and motions to party meetings to win support for UNISON's aims.
Lancashire Unison annually elects a Labour Link Officer who act as the key point of contact.
UNISON branches with Labour Link members can affiliate via their region to the appropriate Constituency Labour Party or District Labour Party. Branches can also elect delegates to represent UNISON in the general management committees of local Labour parties, where policy, campaigning and organisational issues are agreed and where there are important links with local councillors and MPs.
Labour Link magazine is sent to all UNISON members, with UNISON's membership magazine, U, explaining the campaigning work of the UNISON Labour Link and how the links with Labour can take members' interests forward.
